All you computer brainiacs out there, what does it mean a "Trojan" on your computer (I keep thinking a muscle man in a short toga )
I did a virus scan the other day as the computer has been a bit weird, after the scan an infected file came up saying a Trojan virus (pupper as well) it asked if I wanted to quaranteen the file or delete and I deleted it. Did I do the right thing?
I have McAfee Security on my computer but no kids home to help, where is a kid when you need them.
So did I do the right thing to stop anything happening to the computer ? |

Web site quoted here is listed below. (yes, I delete the whole thing too. Make certain all your protection programs have the most recent updates! )
Quote: The term Computer Trojan has often been used interchangably with the term Computer Virus, but in reality has slightly different characteristics. Trojan computer infections are named after the Ancient Trojans who believed the giant horse left behind by the Greeks was a peace offering after years of war. They happily accepted the free gift and brought it inside the walls of their city. Greek invaders hiding inside the horse waited until night, slipped out and opened the front door so the rest of the invaders could come inside the city and take over. This is essentially the way a computer trojan works, you think you are getting something for free (music, smilies, screensaver etc.) and you end up with a bunch of nasty programs on your computer.
The Trojan horse is basically a malicious program accompanied by spyware which you get through email attachment, a messenger program, or from an internet download. Trojans sometimes masquerade as a free program you would like. Once you accept the Trojan into your computer, it will perform a basic installation of itself. Typically, trojans tend to do the following:
Aid in hijacking your web-browser. This means that when you want to go to a particular homepage such as Google or MSN, you end up somewhere else.
Record your keystrokes and transmit it to the attacker. This gives them access to any password protected accounts you have set up, including banking and other sensitive data.
Do malicious functions such as rebooting your PC or deleting something.
Allow the attacker access to your PC to run other code.
Become a spam relay - sending vast amounts of spam to everyone else.
The main difference between a computer virus and a computer trojan is that a Trojan does not try to replicate itself. |

The bottom line? You did the right thing deleting the file.
Way to go! |
Phew Thanks for your advice, glad to know I did do the right thing, gawd be awful if the puter crashed Can't live without it.
Updates are all downloaded now too. |

Macs OS's are generally written in a more secure code than windows... its not the computer its the OS that you use to run it.. Macs OS's are great at not getting bad bugs.. same with LINUX .. windows however .. well they just bugy to begin with..
another way to help keep bugs to a minimum to to NOT use windows explorer.. use firefox.. that one program alone catches tons of nasties..
Argi got bugged few weeks ago and had to wipe his comp out completly then re-install.. and we visit same sites n such and i was fine simply because i use firefox and he used explorer..

Well, my puter is a Dell, but the hubby is a Mac! His name that is. That could make the Trojan part of the conversation a little more interesting. |

When I first read the post I wanted to say that I always thought that a Trojan was something used for safe sex but figured it was not in keeping with a "family oriented" forum. But YOU beat me to it MANDY |

my mac! It's not just the operating system that keeps them safe, it's market share. PC's have the lion share so the viruses are targeted at them.
You may loose the muscle man in the toga, but the Mac is much sexier than PC. It's true, I see it on the Mac/PC commercials daily. If you haven't seen the commericals they are a hoot! |

tiny market share is quickly becoming history, sadly, the world has discovered what life is like without the blue screen of death. |
They've been saying the same thing for 20 years now, an eternity in this biz. They had a shot at it when they opened up their interfaces to third-party manufacturers and almost became non-proprietary.
Now they're trying to gain market share by becoming a wintel clone. So all they have to offer is their operating system, which is little better than Linux because you can't buy 1,000,000 third party peripherals for it. The only reason Linux won't completely take over Mac's market share is because it also doesn't work with all the manufacturers out there.... yet.
