Roses don't smell anymore

I love flowers, and my husband is really good about getting them for me. But, I've noticed in the last couple years, roses don't smell like roses anymore!

Other flowers still are fragarent, so I know it isn't just my nose.

But roses seem to be devoid of aroma!!!

What does that mean?
It is because they have been so hybridized. I read an article about it not too long ago.
That really sucks Crying or Very sad
Maybe you are becoming desensitized to that particular aroma as well?
The fancy roses are too hybridized. Lots of the more old fashioned ones still smell like roses.

Working in a hospital, I get to smell lots of roses! The red ones have the least scent. The other colors tend to have more of that wonderful rose smell. Very Happy
Hi,

Several years ago I took some gardening classes and learned many of the modern day flowers have lost their scent at the expense of being disease resistant, larger buds, longer stems..ect..basically mucked around by man.
The instructor even told us about daffodils that were still blooming and viable after 50 odd years on her grandparents land. The tubers we purchase today may only last a few years before they need replacement.

Heritage roses still smell heavenly, as do the other heritage flowers. Do a search online and find a nursery that specializes in heritage seeds and flowers. Apparently it's the same thing with heritage veggies - supposedly taste far different and better than the ones available today.

Good luck!

My Veteran's Honor Rose Bush (Big Red Ones) just started blooming red again. For some reason they only bloom pink when it's really hot.
Anyway I walked by the bush and saw I got my first red bloom since the summer had started and boy did it smell wonderful.
I even had hubby come over and smell it.
When they are pink in the height of summer they don't have much of a smell to them. Confused
I just love the smell of "real" roses...only second to the smell of lilacs, my very favorite!
I have roses at my front garden and they bloom all year long, lucky me. Anyway, a man stopped by and told me his wife raises roses and the ones you buy in the Florist now the smell has been taken out of them so they stay in bloom longer.
That's sorta sad, don't you think?
It is sad..... But I do think some roses smell horrible.
Some smell exactly like Rose old lady perfume, which makes me want to gag. At our last house we had a light pink rose bush that I called the Old Lady Rose Bush, due to the smell. The roses were pretty but the fragrance was just too strong to have them inside.

My Veteran's Honor bush has a wonderful non old lady smell. Laughing
That is really sad. Sad

What are people going to take the time to stop and smell now? lol

It's like at Christmas when we put up our artificial tree and get some pine-scented plug-in fragrances to bring back the smell. Neutral
WOW! Shocked They can take the smell away? I didn't even know that! So, what's the point of a nice rose that blooms year around but smells bad? Or doesn't smell at all? Rolling Eyes
It all goes back to genetics. The more modern roses get away from their species roots, the more the scent is bred out. As someone mentioned, the old garden roses still have their nose.......but not all OGRs had fragrance to begin with. The ones we associate with fragrance are usually the Damask roses and classical tea roses. Some breeders are breeding back into the OGR's to get the form and color back. Others continue to strive for the perfect modern rose with the high center.

Remember fragrance is determined by time of day. Red are better duiring mid day, whites and yellows are fleeting in the morning. Also whites and yellows tend to be fruity. Reds and pinks hint at the Damask heritage.

I agree, most modern roses smell just like the leaves, that is no floral fragrance at all.

Shocked You are very "Rosesmart"! Very Happy Thank you for the information.
Shocked
Wow! I'm always amazed at the knowledge of y'all!!!!!!!!!!

Ok...next question:

Should one wish to order roses from a florist that have a "rose" smell, is that possible? Can you ask for that, or will the florist laugh their tushie off? Or, are most of the commercial roses stink...ah, I mean, scent free?

I REALLY WANT SOME ROSES THAT SMELL LIKE ROSES!!!!

(Sorry, having a wee breakdown here!)
I would definitey ask for ones that smell. For the price you pay, it's the least you can do!

I have 2 neices that are floral designers and I know they would honor that request, especially if you weren't real picky about color, etc.
rotsa ruck.........I'm wondering if the mauve colored might not be the most fragrant right now.......I'm thinking of all the times I've been in the wholesale place lately and I don't remember smelling roses, granted the roses were cool.
Only man could take something as beautiful as a rose and screw it up Sad
They did that with carnations too! The clove scent became associated with carnations/funerals. So they bred it out. Hard to replace that nose once it's gone.
