The Dulux Dog

I was at an open air car boot sale this mornig with the dogs (other half had spotted a fishing road as we drove past Rolling Eyes ) and met a lovely man who made a big fuss of Dylan (our 22 week old sheepie) and then said that his dog is the grandson of the original Dulux Dog - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dulux .

I'd have loved to have had a longer chat with him but it was starting to rain and our eldest dog had a bit of a squiffy tummy so we had to leave but I'm hoping he'll be there next month so that I can find out more.

I don't think the Dulux advertising campaign was aired in the States but for us Brits of a certain age the Dulux dog brings back lovely warm memories!
Dulux was never advertised in the states, but I've watched enough BBC America to know all about it. One episode of Cash in the Attic had someone auction off a Dulux dog statue and it brought in several hundred pounds.

Wonder if anyone has an OES named Dulux.
Hi,

My curiousity is piqued as I was unable to get any info from Wikepedia - weird as it said it was "case sensitive" and could not be opened.

So who was the Delux dog? I'm in Canada and hadn't heard of him/her.

Marianne,
Try this:

The other link had a period at the end so that is why it may not have worked.
Dulux is a paint brand and for many years in the UK, Europe and Australia the OES has been an icon for the brand. One of the most famous "Dulux" dogs was "Fernville Lord Digby" in the UK.

Here our OES are used still for Dulux and through our state clubs we send them to do promotions on behalf of Dulux, they appear in Ads and on TV and promotions, Dulux passes on sponsorship to the OES clubs for use of the dogs in their advertising campaigns & promotions Very Happy

A long association with Dulux is the OES as an Icon for the company. When we go walking it is not Hey there is an OES, it is Ooooh a "Dulux Dog" Laughing

Here is one that was filmed in Melbourne, hope the link works.

If you can't see it here, try:

Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes in the Uk you cant go out for a walk without hearing at least one person say "Hey look theres a dulux dog!"

ps that you tube was funny....didnt see enough of the dog though!
For many years in the Uk everyone called OES Dulux dogs!

And everyone who had one said it was related to THE DULUX DOG Laughing Laughing Laughing

The Dulux dog memorabilia (spelling Embarassed ) can be worth a fortune!

That was so interesting to know. Thank you Lisa for attaching the ad. I have lived in the States all of my life and vagly remember Dulux paint and a sheepdog....hmmmm
Yep. Everywhere we go we hear "Look it's a Dulux dog!"

The less educated ones are often heard saying "Look, it's a Durex dog!"

Rolling Eyes
Yikes Lisa, that ad is a bit scary! Although I confess to being a bag of nerves today after watching a French film called "Ils" [*] last night and still worrying about what happened to their dog!

Here's an ad with some more "Dulux dog" loveliness: http://youtube.com/watch?v=dhr5r8BE44w&feature=related

...and although not a sheepie, here's a lovely British tv advert for coal with a dog, a cat and a mouse: http://youtube.com/watch?v=uQhyndSHJec

Our first sheepie was also referred to as this as he insisted on sleeping in bed between us!! Embarassed
Here's my Dulux dog... once used as a paint store display:

When I lived in England I saw the Dulex adds everywhere. That was in the mid to late 70's. The first time I saw a Sheepie was Paul McCartney's "Martha" though...and I fell in love forever. hearts
Karen...now you have to explain "Durex". Very Happy
As this is a family site I will leave you to look it up Embarassed
Oh Nita love your OES statue with the Dulux paint can. Very Happy

Worth doing worth Dulux Wink

Wish I could find previous Dulux ads done here in OZ, there brilliant and especially the wash and wear paint one, the dog featured in that one, took 5 different oes over a week for the TV ad. Ooooh the dulux dog, new breed featured LOL. Laughing Laughing Laughing
Laughing The dog on the photo is NORWEGIAN, and she is Pirellis litter sister NUCH SUCH Bobbyclown Dare for More, Owner Ingunn E. Aase, Haugesund, Norway.
If you click on the photo it will give you the name of the dog Laughing
Karen...I was kidding...I know what it is. Smile
I love that commercial (ad) that was posted - although it did make me jump - that OES is beautiful. I had never heard of Dulux either until I got Mona Lisa and my husband works with a British guy and he called her that.

LUCKY DOG!!
when the dulux ad came out everyone wanted a sheepie then when the fad was over the sheepies were abandoned when people realised how big they grew and the coat took a lot of attention to keep it that way, Oes rescue was inundated, dulux now gives some financial help to the oes rescue. Also breeding was cut back to 500 per year so homes could be found for abandoned dogs. When things had settled down the breeding when up again.
I remember when that happened with dalmations because of the Disney movie "101 Dalmations". People are so silly!!
Thanks Lisa for explaining what Dulux dog meant. It was interesting to read all the other post as well. I'm now a Dulux dog fan!!

Pepe that is so sad but true. I'm glad the company stepped up and took some of the responsibility.

I got my hubby a small copy of that ornament. I think I put it in our car boot stuff to sell, too much rubbish in my house. Must still be there!
After reading this post and watching the advertisement I watched all the ones on YouTube about Dulux so I could see the OES and I made my hubby watch them too. Then 2 days ago I was at the dog park and met an Austrialian couple and they called Mona a "Dulux" dog... SMALL WORLD.
Not a week goes by without at least two people commenting on my 'Dulux' dog, usually more than that, I've also had a couple of Durex comments too...with one realising after what she'd said.... Laughing
