I keep mine next to my computer on my desk. That way I can make entries into the register when I pay a bill online.

How do you balance your checkbook?

I may be sorry I asked.

MMM people still do that? I usually just check on l ine - see if I have money or not Twisted Evil
The register is with me at all times because I actually do balance my checkbook with every debit, despite the points and giggles from my friends when I whip it out at a store or even Starbucks or something, lol. However, since in this day and age there is virtually no use for checks, on the rare occasion that I need one, I never remember where I left the checks last. Yes, they should ideally stay by my desk but they always seem to migrate away from there.

Ultimately, my checking account is just for spending money so there's only a small amount in there. Since I've done so many years of register entering, I always know almost to the penny how much is in there even without the register!
I check my balance on line nearly every day. I have duplicate checks and I keep the duplicates and any receipts until the items clear. So I can always calculate my remaining balance from the online balance less checks/receipts.
I have NEVER balanced my check book......... I do on line banking and use a debit card, I don't write 25 checkes in a year. I cehcek my account every morning (after I check oes.org) and make sure I recognize all the charges and deposits and then make a mental note of my balance.

I have never overdrawn my account and never had any "surprises" in the balance.
I am obsessive about keeping track of our money. I check my balance online every morning and usually more often than that. I always try to enter debits in my register as soon as I make a purchase, and try to keep up with hubby, cuz even when he's home he doesn't always remember to give me his receipts, with him its more difficult, but we found the solution. He has a credit card attached to our bank, and I check it obsessively as well. One to make sure no unauthorized charges have been made, and two to make sure he's okay if I haven't heard from him in a couple of days. During a blackout no one can make phone calls or use the internet, but if it goes for more than a day, he will make a small purchase just so I know he's ok. But back on subject, I always know how much money we have, my husband however never knows, lol, nor does he care, and he likes it that way. When he wants something, even if its lunch with the guys or a dvd, he'll call and make sure its ok......yeah, he's trained! Laughing

That's a really good idea!
How would the transaction go through during power and/or internet outages?
Oh, I am so bad!!!
1-800-Wachovia!
I do keep mental notes of what is out but, I don't keep very good records!
OUCH!
What is a checkbook? Laughing I think there are only two things I write checks for. School Lunches and the water company (because they don't offer online or pay by phone services)

I check my balance online.... make sure it all adds up and all the charges are correct.
The transactions will post during a blackout, because they are not commo. You know how people are about getting their money, lol. I have shared this tip with some of the guys who's wives are a little more worrisome than me, as it will ease some of the tension. Oh, and I just want to brag, my hubby was promoted yesterday to E-7, which is Sergeant First Class (SFC)! I am sooo proud of him, and he made it in pretty good time, he's been in the army for just under nine years! And he still doesn't know who much money we have or when the bills are due, lol!
I apparently am one step above using a clay tablet and stylus. I write a lot of checks. I don't do online bill paying because I can't be bothered. It's much faster for me to write a check and stick it in an envelope then it is to get out the laptop, power it up, sign-in etc. etc.

And I balance my checkbook every month. Well, balance is the wrong word. The bank and I usually differ by about $100, in my favor. Again, I can't be bothered to go back and find the error. As long as it's on my side! And it takes me about 7 minutes to balance the checkbook--the time it takes to smoke a cigarette.

Hey, didn't you quit? Or are you still just measuring things in smoker's time? Twisted Evil

You're not one of those who writes a check in the fast lane at the grocery store are you?! Twisted Evil

I pretty much just go online and check my balance every few days (or more or less often depending on what my purchasing has been). I check to see how much I have, check to see if certain items have cleared, make sure there aren't any weird charges.

I'm still quitted. But like those who don't change with Daylight Saving Time, I'm still stuck on Smoker's Time.

And no, I don't write checks in the express lane. I mutter rude things loudly when someone in front of me does that.
Joan used to write checks all the time, for the smallest amounts even when she had cash in her pocket. $2 at a used bookstore, for instance.

Now it's use the credit card for everything! $2 for a cup of coffee at Dunkies, or a 99c cheeseburger ($1.04 with the tax) at McDucks!!
i balance our checkbook every month when the statement comes in...we save all of our reciepts, enter them in the register and put the reciepts in an envelope...

when the statement comes, i cross check the reciepts to the register and to the statement...i have found more mistakes from resturaunts than any other place...

i know to the penny how much we have...i am still old fashion and trust me more than computers.......
I balance my checking account a few times a week. I rarely write checks, but I use my debit card all the time. I had a problem with several business not cashing the checks for days if not weeks. Since I started useing the debit and balancing every few days I have not had trouble. I did not bounce check I just never quite knew how much money I had.
