Shopping

I have noticed recently, so many stores are now allowing or encouraging you to bring you dog in to shop with you. I can just see my girl eating half the store while I am busy browsing on the top shelves Embarassed
Happening around here too. But I think they are figuring most will be people with small dogs they can pick-up and carry, even tho' they mention dog must be on a leash. My dogs are pretty well trained but no way can I see myself taking 1,2 or all 3 of them Shocked into a store, attempting to load at least 2 - 40# bags of dog food & 6 bags of biscuits into a cart and then being able to find my wallet to pay! Laughing And don't forget all the people with other dogs who are not paying 100% attention to their own dogs when I walk by with mine Sad I thought one of the nice things about middle age was going shopping without my kids Laughing
Well, if I took multiples into a store with anything edible I'd probably be asked to weigh them before and after Embarassed Embarassed But I find dog friendly stores can be nice for puppies/young dogs/fosters (rescues) in terms of teaching them basic manners.

But Marilyn is correct: most people don't watch their dogs, so you have to be on your toes, and it ends up being more about getting the dogs out and less about shopping. Too, if you have a shy dog or dogs with "issues" you're trying to work through, like some of my fosters, you also have to protect them from well-meaning but clueless people. Especially OES, which even otherwise normal people can't seem to keep their hands off Wink

Its starting to happen near me too. My pet stock store says bring them in, they have a bath you can hire and they offer to let you try on dog coats. No, no try them on the dog not me. Very Happy

So I took Rastus off to try on coats as the standard coats often dont fit a skinny dalmo, he just walks out the neck hole and wears it round his waist till it falls off.

Mmmmmm dont think I'll repeat the experience. We DID get a coat but I dont know if it was worth it. Dalmo's are reknowned scavengers and always hungry. I spent the whole time telling him to stand so we could try the coats on while he spent the whole time trying to drag me over to the shelf with all the treats on it. Embarassed
Why put the treats on a bottom shelf only 3 feet from where all the coats are? Shocked Evil or Very Mad

Then the store assistant GAVE him treats because she loves Dalmos!!! Talk about reward bad manners. At least he sat and took them gently not like a certain sheepie I know who would have snatched them hand and all. Rolling Eyes
I have to add this, our pet stores welcome our pets. Never have I seen one bad dog or a owner not watch their pet. I just can't handle my crew in there. Maybe one at a time! leave 2 home. Always on a leash too.
I'm all for pet stores letting dogs in, but I have never been to one that didn't allow it since I've owned them, so I guess I've been lucky!

We always take our dogs!! Almost every weekend to get some love from people. I think when people go to pet stores, they expect to move their leg a little when passing an aisle with a dog or whatever. It's different for me, and I'm in full agreement if we're at a place NOT typically known to have dogs.

I've ran into SEVERAL vicious dogs at a pet store, but never while my dogs are with us. I'm a snob when it comes to who my dog can sniff and be sniffed by. I will flat out pull my dog away from yours if you come near us if I don't feel YOUR dog looks friendly and looks like he can be dangerous (from the way the owner is holding their dog, breed, etc). My husband feels uncomfortable, I'm sure, but he also knows I could care less if the other people get offended.
Only time I took one of mine into the pet store, he marked the giant cardboard display of dog cookies Laughing MINE! That was years ago and I haven't had the nerve to take others in.

Sheeeeesh, it's bad enough to spend over $100 in there each visit, I have to entertain the guys as well Rolling Eyes

Anyway, one look at the groomers and mine would beat a hasty retreat for the door.
Haha! The 2 main pet stores here are Petco and PetSmart, so they welcome dogs (or any pet I guess), too. Usually the dogs in there are well looked after and I only get really annoyed at the ones who have a tiny dog and sit there baby-talking to it constantly. Razz But that can happen anywhere! Kobe LOVE LOVE LOVES PetSmart (she boards there and goes to daycamp) so she is in heaven when she realizes we're on our way there. And they all know and love her. Hubby brought both in the other day but I don't know how he does it. Excited Kobe is enough for me, let alone the two of them. I'm not that strong!

When I first read this for some reason I was thinking clothing stores or the like. THAT would be interesting! I'm just imagining Katie running around and so very delicately pulling each item off their respective hangers behind me while I browse.

I see a lot of you who are able to bring your dogs into shops in your town, or tie them up outside - anyone in the US who can do that? Is it just how the town is, or what? I haven't seen anywhere here that would be viable, but once Katie is better trained that would be fun.
I often take one or more dogs to some of our pet stores at a time - its great to be able to get them out of the car and do some training in a real life situation. I had only one with me the other day in a small boutique pet store and there were three clueless owners with varying size dogs. I always tell people she doesn't like other dogs in her face - please keep your dog back. One lady was very rude (she had absolutely no control of her chocolate lab - maybe about a year old?) and of course on a retractable leash! While my dog sat quietly at my side I had to repeatedly ask the lady to please control her dog as he was rushing us.

She was on her way out of the store and told me I shouldn't take my dog in public if she was bothered by other dogs. Shocked Okay - what about taking untrained dogs out and not trying to be respectful of others? The pet store owner apologized to me and said she didn't know how to handle the hordes of pet people who come into the store with no clue as to what is allowable doggie etiquette. She said she stopped allowing her own dogs to be in the main part of the store (she has 10 performance dogs) because people just don't get it and don't want to try to understand what is acceptable and what isn't.

But, on the shopping issue - do you know a sheep dog can take one individually wrapped tendon out of a display case - repeatedly? Talk about impulse buys Embarassed Rolling Eyes
I've always been one of the owners who felt dogs who are known to fight or bite other dogs should keep their dogs out of these stores, which is why I don't put my dog near certain dogs near the store (even if I am completely wrong by my assumption of their dog which was most likely a pitbull).

Store aisles can be so narrow, BUT if my dog can pass their dog and not have them try to lunge or bite then I'm okay with it esp. when they're obviously controlling their dog.

I think there are other places people can train their dog that doesn't put mine in danger.

Well like I said - my dog was sitting at my side. I am not talking about aggressive dogs here - just pet etiquette. I would not take an aggressive dog into a store. However, I expect pet people to keep their dogs under control - not at the end of a leash, pulling them around - but walking politely by their sides, minding their own business. I feel people should have their dogs under their control - just like I would expect them to have their kids under control. A pet store is not a dog park and your dog should not be rushing into my dogs face - for any reason. That said, one of the best places to train obedience dogs is in a pet store around clueless pet owners JMHO

Ive often thought that it would be cool if there were some kind of special license indicating that your dog has passed a basic training/temperament test, that would allow only decently behaved dogs in public places...and maybe, therefore, a lot more places!

Yup...like that, or even something even simpler... it bugs me that businesses and events often feel that they have to take an "all or nothing" approach to allowing dogs (or children Wink ). My best friend, who is also an artist (as well as a dog trainer), and I have even approached one show we do with the idea of allowing artist's dogs with a CGC, but not customer dogs or untrained dogs. The rule they have currently is artist's dogs are allowed, as long as they are kept strictly out of sight. This is a shame, because my dogs can really sell artwork! Laughing Ok, ok, they actually really distract people from buying....but my day is more fun with them there Embarassed
Yeah the pet store owner was telling me that they finally had to insist that dogs conly come in on leashes becasue so many people claim their dogs are leash trained - not.

But i have to say, if you got simpler than the CGC it wouldn't say much. Personally my boys each needed a year of additioanl training AFTER their CGC's before I thought they were ready for prime time as it were.
As a business person, all I really ask of customer's dogs is that they are under control on a leash, not barking (Abby hates that Rolling Eyes ) and please dont pee on my rugs Shocked Laughing

Of course, having said that, I have to confess...I made the mistake of stopping to chat with my BF at her booth, while on my way to give Abby a potty break...and took too long for my girl's iffy bladder control Shocked Shocked Shocked ...sorry Karla! Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed

The desert is pretty liberal about where you can take your dog. All Lowe's and one of the Home Depots, as well as all the pet supply stores welcome your dog and frequently have dog snacks as treats at the checkout. I have even spotted a number of pocket dogs in very expensive leather bags in the grocery stores - technically that is against the law, but it is so hot here, and it is illegal to leave your dog in the car.

I am told the Neiman Marcus in Orange County welcomes well mannered dogs. I have been in a number of clothing and shoe stores in San Francisco where people have had their dogs.

I was just in Monterey and there were a couple of restaurants on the Pier that allow dogs - and I mean sheepie sized dogs! I don't know how they do it as it seems every Farmer's Market is citing state code about the illegality of pets in the proximity of food establishments. (I am sorry... but do they understand the concept of where vegetables comes from?)

So all of this is to say, I don't know how they do it. Apparently we have a state law in CA and some municipalities have overlays where they decide that dogs and food can be in the same area.

That said, sometimes my puppies need to stay home and take a nap, while I have a cocktail and lunch!
Pot of Tea
Yes, sure that's tea in my cup!

Yay!!! Yay!!! Yay!!! Yay!!! Yay!!! Go Dance Go Dance Go Dance Go Dance

PS I just looked at this site and they have a list of stores, including Nordies (yea!) that accept dogs.
